Default frisbee?

What was the purpose of the "frisbee" and what is gained if anything by removing it? What is involved in the removal?

All the tech advice I have read says it has no real function. To my understanding the GM engineers believed it to serve a function in the belt not jumping shieve. When I took mine off, it was just a matter of pulling the 4 bolts, remove frisbee, and run the bolts back on. (I have a '91) This will lower the rotating mass. I have heard claims of anywere from 2 to 10 hp increase.
I bet that someone will jump in who can explain this better....

I also have a 91 and the disk only weighed 3.5 LBs. The one on your 88 (if memory serves) will weigh 7 to 10 Lbs. When I removed mine I added a flat and lock washer to each bolt.

GM put it on in 88 after they redesigned the AC compressor, its just a large weight attached to the WP and you won't hurt anything by removing it. Up to 10hp will come back to you.

Took mine off so I could add the Camber Brace. No adverse effects have been observed.

I just removed mine on my '88. Took off the 4 nuts on the W/P pulley studs. Removed the frisbee. Added some washers on the studs to act as shims or else I wouldn't have enough thread to tighten the nuts all the way back. Reinstalled the nuts. The put on locknuts for piece of mind. Didn't gain any horsepower that I can feel in the butt dyno, but I can tell the engine revs a little freer.
