The power antenna on my 94 coupe is acting up. For the past year or so it has operated up and down, but would not go all the way in. It would stop anywhere between 1" and 4" left exposed. Then about a month ago, something happened and it got stuck in the up position. Today I just happened to push down on the antenna and now it operates as before - going up and down, but not going all the way in. Do I need to replace the mast only in that the motor still runs or do I need to replace the whole power antenna unit?
Here is what you do: (of coarse I messed it up and had to buy another mast)
Buy just a mast (around $15.00). Pop the rubber gromet out and unscrew the cap nut. Turn on your radio ON and pull up the old mast as it goes up. You might have to do this a few times to get it to come all the way out.
Compair the old mast to the new mast. If the old mast is shorter, DO NOT cut it to match. There is a small piece of the old mast cord in the motor housing. You must remove the motor from the car (Not easy), and take the housing apart to remove all the old mast cord.
Then reassemble the motor in the car and feed the new mast into the top hole while someone turns the radio OFF. This also might take a few trys. It will work, just be pateint.
Don't do what I did to the first mast, I cut it to match the old mast length and destroyed it.
I had almost the exact same problem on mine and the mast repair kit fixed it. One of the easiest and cheapest things I think I have ever fixed on my Vette!!!
I was having a similar problem you were where the mast would go up fine, but when it retracted, it would still stick up 6" and not go any further. I tried the replacement mast approach (which was pretty easy), and even the replacement still stayed 6" up.
My guess is that something is jammed in the antenna motor or something. I'll be removing it this weekend to check it out. If anyone has any ideas of what I might find, I'd love to hear them.
Otherwise, I guess I'll get out my credit card for a $150 new antenna assembly. :-(
