no one in the general area can answer this so im posting it here. my 92 has been slighty drifting to the left and i finally got tired of it. took it to the shop to have the alignment done. they told me that they can not do it because they need special alignment shims that is a dealer part only. and that it will cost more to do the alignment than a regular car. is this true? if so were do i get the shims, ive looked all over the web and cant find them. thank you for your your help in advance.
4 wheel alignments are generally more expensive, and take more time/effort to do then an alignment for a normal car... I've never heard of those shims though- I just had my '85 aligned, and everything came out perfect (even got a printout of the camber/toe/etc.)
Have you tried taking it to another shop to get a 2nd opinion?
I've had both my 87 and 92 done at my local independent shop and there has never been any discussion about any dealer-only special shims. The front shims are the standard U-shaped alignment shims and the rear shims look the same.
You definitely want a 4-wheel alingment done on the Vette. And you should not pay over $100 to have a good 4-wheel alignment done. The new alignment equipment is much more accurate and a good shop will have the computerized system that will give you a "before" and "after" printout of the alignment specifications.
There are some shady shops out there that simply perform what is called a "toe-and-go". They charge for a full 4-wheel alignment but the only work they do is to set the front toe angle, hang around the car so it looks like they are working and make you think they are checking and adjusting both the front and rear alignment specs.
Find another shop for a second opinion. If there is a Discount Tire near you, try them.
