I have got a "buzz" in my 91 L98 A4 Coupe..... I can't pinpioint location, but it certainly seems to be coming from the area around the pre-cats, transmission, cataltytic converter.... somewhere in that area. I tried the old piece of hose trick, but still can't nail down what is making the noise. Buzz is the best term I can think of to describe the noise. Makes the noise both in park or drive. I can't hear it when the car is moving or when in the car, but outside of the car the noise is quite evident
Has anybody had something similar? Any thoughts on what it might be? I'm going on a 1500 mile trip in about 10 days and I'm a little concerned.... Thanks in advance for any suggestions / ideas.
The pressure regulator in the trans pump buzzes. There is an updated part to fix this during overhaul. I simply grind a flat on the ring land and it fixes it. It can be annoying but does not hurt anything.
So there is no way to get to it / fix it without ripping the tranny tranny apart? Glad to hear that it's not hurting anything (assuming that's what it is!!) but it is certainly annoying.
I've had buzzes from two other sources. The first was a catalytic convertor that was coming apart on the inside. The pieces that were crumbling had worked their way to the bottom and would "buzz" at a certain RPM. The other buzz I had, which coincedentally sounded almost exactly the same, was a loose O2 sensor in the bung. It happened immediately after my LT header install, so I think the tech forgot to tighten the O2 all the way.
I was able to pinpoint both by laying under the car (with it off, of course) and tapping on different parts of the exhuast until I pinpointed the culprit. I don't know if either of these are similar to your problems, but I hope you are able to get it fixed before your trip. Piece of mind on a roadtrip is so valuable...

Perfusion....Hmmmm...thanks for the suggestions...I will crawl under again and try again to pinpoint the location. I have considered gutting the cats anyways...may actually have a good reason now to do it...although my conscious tells me I should have them....the whole global warming thing and all....
My gut feeling all along has been cats...but we'll see. Thanks all for the tips.
