Hi all, I'm look'en to do a mod. package. I have a 92 LT-1 auto with the economy gear. Its a daily driver. I installed a set of hooker long tubes 1 7/8" , high flow cats, 3" tubes, eliminated resonator box, into 3" in and out flomaster 40's. I did this before i read Lingenfelter's book and as he is fond of saying.... it's lazy in the low revs. (but it does pull nice from 3500 up). If i had it to do over again i'd go with smaller dia. tubes. OK so much for background. What i want to do is intake, heads, cam. package. I'm not look'en to do what i did with the exhaust...3,000 and up performance, but a more all round performance upgrade. And of course i want the best bang-for-the buck.
I was wondering if the super ram is worth investing in or port the LT-1 plenum or poss. LT-4 plenum??? Should i go with stage II or III heads?? And what cam?; lingenfelters, LThot, comp 305, or306 . Do i need to bump up the injectors and/or the T-body to take advantage of the upgrades?? I know i'll have to get a chip.
This is turning into a novel. Anyway any input would be appreciated
With that exhaust, I would have to really consider going to a 396 engine with a CC306, and it could take more, your tubes are huge. Don't think I'd drive that daily though
After that, everything. 3.45s only because its an automatic, but in a D44. 2600 TC, tranny cooler, because you'll need them. Stage III heads, match the intake, you'll be able to use the 52mm at that point as well. Injector upgrade?, oh yeah.
I think you'll need most of that just to get some umph at the lower revs, and you wont lose top end.
yea i know the tubes are toooo big but whats done is done.
(sure sounds nice though). i just want it to run as nice as it sounds. The gears and TC are comming after i get the motor where i want. then i'm gonna learn from the experiance and build a 383 to stick in in a year or two.
If you have an automatic C4, you need a tranny cooler, period.
The biggest enemy of the 700/4L60 is heat, and the stock system is woefully inadequate at removing that heat. Putting one in will likely double the lifetime of the transmission.
When you start messing with the power levels, it becomes even more important. The extra torque generated will tear up parts very fast once they overheat.
I believe there 1 7/8. There hooker super comps even had them jet coated. A mech. friend that does alot of work on local circle track cars ordered and installed them. buy the way I've heard that adding a H pipe can get alittle better low end. kinda like extending the collector?? what do ya think and is it worth it?
If your looking for something that performs well on the street, drives good, sounds great with a sorta lumpy idle, and heck can even pass emmissions I would look at
a gear.
LT4 hotcam kit
vigilante 2800 stall.
If you feel really good about it you can put a set of good heads on the car and run high 11's all day long. That is all for about $2500

Yes its like extending the collector, and can make a difference in where the torque peak comes in, plus it might kill resonance.
Ya hit it on the head, cept not worried bout emissions. (don't want to pollute either ie the high flow cats) I want to do the heads cus I'd prob. just do it later anyway. Ya know how that is. I love the car thats why its a daily driver, and i want to do the whole package at once to minamize down time. Then start saving again and do gears and TC. Guess i want the best performance i can get with street manners. sorta best of both worlds.
I'll have to see if i can find the reciept and get a number.
Also does it make any diff. where the cross over is, as long as its between the collector and mufflers?? The resonance is alittle much for my girlfriend but it sounds more like a PURRRR to me. (a big cat not U'er house cat )
I'd suggest going with the gears and torque converter first. Some 3.54 gears and a 2400-2600 TC (with tranny cooler) will make a hugh seat-of-the-pants difference over what you have now. Unless you plan on doing a lot of racing, you really don't need to spend the big bucks on a Vigilante. A good tranny shop can get you one in the $300-$400 dollar range (maybe a B&M).
