My 94 with an automatic and 95,000 miles makes an unhealthy grinding noise when I put it into reverse from drive, hot or cold. At first it feels like it has engaged reverse, but if you give it some gas it seems to "grind a gear" for a second then it goes backwards. But if I put it into reverse and wait for 3 or 4 seconds then give it gas, it's fine, no noise. (It sounds like the sound a slipping fine toothed spline would make.) Going into drive from reverse you feel the engine load change like it's gone into drive, but if you hit the gas right away, there is a slight hesitation and then a tug as it fully engages drive and then it goes. But again if I wait for 3 or 4 seconds all is well, no hesitation. Fluid was down a bit when I bought it a couple thousand miles ago. I've topped it up to the hot mark when it's hot.
Since I have no history on the car I'd planed to do total fluid flush now anyway, but is that going to be a waste of money if the trans has to come apart for this?
Anyone else had these symptoms? Any thoughts as to where to start the diagnosis?
