My gas gauge was always reading full so I decided to fix it today. It was very easy to do! Once you take the pump assembly out you can see the sliding contact. I used a knife to gently scape the swinging arm and I also retensioned it. The swinging arm is suppose to sweep across a bunch of wires, it was to far away. I used the knife to gently push it back closer. Lift the float up to about half way, then it's easier to retension the arm by the contacts. There's more room. I also used a bent peice of metal to rub across the wires that the arm sweeps on, to clean those. Be very careful! The arm contact on mine was pretty dirty, it's shiney now. Done! That's it!
It's a 10mm for the bolts. A flash light will help you line the fuel pump sock back up into the yellow plastic box at the bottem of the gas tank. I put a new sock on the pump, it looked kinda clogged up. NAPA had one in stock for six bucks.
While your there, you may want to clean the connections from the plug that goes on the fuel pump. Mine were dirty but not super bad. My gas tank seal looked pretty old so I added a little RTV around it. I think the hardest part was keeping everything clean. Clean around everything before taking things apart. Plan for a small bit of gas to come out of the hoses when you take them off. I used windshield washer fluid to flush the area where the gas spilled.
Fixed! My tank read full when I started. Looking in the tank I estimated about half. Starting the car when I was done, the gauge read half!
