Default AC Blower...... on a 84

I went out this afternoon turned on the AC and there was hardly any air coming out the vents. This morning everything was fine. Any recommendations as to the culprit?

Agent 86 - Thanks but that is a little more sophisiticated that my ol 84. If I was to put some cool electronics in my 84 they might spit them back at me.

I was looking at this 84 AC Electrical. One of three things, the resistor pack, switch or high speed relay. Of course there is always the blower itself.

Jumper the blower to the battery - that will confirm whether or not it's working. Also, try a couple of taps on the housing - if that gets it going, you need a new motor. Otherwise, it's the relay or the resistor pak.

SunCR - Thanks. Is the relay the one located under the blower? Where is the resistor pack?

Yes, the relay is just below the blower assy. and the resistor pack is mounted on the condensor housing box in the engine bay, on the drivers side of the housing. I have heard also on this forum that sometimes there is a buildup of leaves and whatever by the condensor that blocks good flow from the fan anyway, so I guess if your fan seemed marginal anyway it would be a good time to check it all out.
have fun !!!!!!

I jumpered the blower and it does blow (makes noise like it is blowing anyway) but not much air is coming out of the ducts. I am thinking it may be one of the diaphram valves in the dash. I need to run the fan and poke around for a bit.

AFter jumpering the blower I decided to hook it back up, start her up and turn on the AC. I noticed that there is air coming from the defroster vent and from under the kick panel on the passenger side. Does this indicate one of the vacuum operated flaps in the dash is not opening?

More than likely it's loss the vacuum source. GM's suck the defroster door shut by default. For Manual Air, vacuum flows from the source to the Dash Panel which, as you turn or move the Selector, uncovers a port and the vacuum flows to whatever solenoid controls the heater plenum door for that position. Even in the off position, the vacuum has to go somewhere, so GM designed it to suck the defroster door shut. In any event, lose vacuum and gravity keeps the defroster door open and all you get is defrost.

I don't know where the source is on your '84. If there's a vacuum diagram, that should help you track it down. Also, there should be a check valve in the line that keeps vacuum flowing in the direction of the panel only. You'll need to find that too and then make sure you can only blow air through it in one direction. If not, you'll need a new one.

I agree its probably a loss of the vacuum source at the manifold..
The 'beer sphere' under the left headlamp should 'store' vacuum.. It should have a tee on top with a rubber cap, pop it off and see if there is any vacuum present. Mine stores vacuum even after a week or more of not using the car. If no vac present, i would suspect the check valve, or the vac source itself. I don't think its likely the prob is under the dash unless you have been tinkering in there recently??

The only thing I did was remove the head unit to get to some power leads for my new tach. I have noticed that before the summer hit I did have some warm air coming from the vents but I really did not pay that much attention to it other than "hmmm... i need to look in to that". We guess what I guess now is the time.

Thanks for the pic.
