Some Advice
im looking at a 160 thermo and thermochip combo... just to get it running a little smoother...
also... anyone in the Macomb County, Michigan wanna put in my fuel pump?? lol i need help.. cant do it myself!
you can put in any temp thermostat you want but the car is going to run 195-210 anyway. The fans are programmed to come on at around 224* and the cooling systems were designed to run in the 200* range

The 160 is fine, but in Michigan I would use a 180, unless you just put that car up for the whole winter.
From my own experience long before I joined the forum, I bought and installed the thermomaster chip and 160 thermostat on my 1985. I felt that the car ran faster. But for the next several years I fought a continious problem of the dreaded "PING" an acceleration. I tried various brands of gas, different octane grades, added octane boosters, changed gap on plugs, changed knock sensor and varied the distributor timing. This problem always seemed to be a on and off thing, thinking that one solution had worked and then have the problem come up again.
I made the decision after installing new AFR heads and a SuperRam base intake to have the car custom tuned on the dyno and have a new chip burned. I my case, I arranged to have this done by TJWONG (A forum member in Vancouver Washington) when I made a trip up to Seattle. Of all the things I have done with this car, I think that this was the best decision I ever made. Tom Wong ran the car on his dyno and read the results of the first run with the Hypertech thermomaster chip. The result was that at wide open throttle (WOT) the chip was advancing the distributor to 43 degrees of advance and SUBTRACTING FUEL during this advance causing the car to run very lean. The DAMN chip had be the cause of the PING all these years. Tom normally likes to see 30-31 degrees advance and the addition of fuel. He burned four chips and tested the results on the dyno before burning each new chip. The result was he felt the 3rd chip maximised the performance at WOT. I now have a car that performs MUCH better than before and the gas mileage increased and no more PING.
I would suggest staying with the stock GM chip or find a good tuner in your area that can custom burn you a chip. I think that for the dollars spent, your best money would be to get the custom chip.
If you can change spark plugs and replace the distributor cap and rotor you might consider trying to replace the fuel pump. It is not that difficult. Disconnect the battery, remove the rubber around the filler neck, remove the hoses to the filler neck, remove the bolts around the filler neck and pull out the assembly. Pull off the old pump and replace with the new one and replace the filter sock. Put it back together. If you have never done anything like this before, figure about an hour+ to do. I did mine in less than 30 minutes, but I have been working on cars for years. Good luck.
Fuel pump is a piece of cake in C4 corvette. Also agree about the chip, save your money, or spend it on a better flowing exhaust, or another mod that gives you more power.
I took it back out. I'll sell it to you for 1/2 price (seriously)
