Just out of curiousity, are KYB or Monroe shocks any good for our cars (I've got a '90 vert). Just wondering because they are quite a bit less than the bilstiens.
I don't know about the Monroes, but I would suspect they are on the soft side. The KYBs are an excellent shock for the money. Probably good for a daily driver, but I would not use them for high speed or track events. By the way I think Koni Sports are probably one of the "best" shocks out there for the C4s.
As a replacement shock for street use, the KYB Gas-A-Just shocks are a great deal. Summit Racing has them for around $30 each plus their $8 handling charge for an order.

Happy with my KYB's. Good shock for a little money

KYBs are great shocks at a decent price. It depends on what you want out of your car. If you are planning to auto x the car, then there are much better choices but at a much higher cost. For an daily driver or non-combatant, the KYBs are a excellent choice. If you are on a tight budget then go for the Monroes, I just installed a set on a ladies 85 C4 and she was ecstatic about the way the car drove. Of course anything was better than her old worn out OE shocks.

I had Monroe’s from the previous owner. Maybe they where beat to crap but they handled like crap under any kind of spirited driving. But I decided to get QA1.
KYB makes more shocks than anyone else in the world. They know what they're doing and the shocks work great within their scope of design, which is street driving. On the street, they will work with the best of the street handling shocks. If you need more than street handling, you would want more than a KBY is designed to do. I do 90% street driving and 10% spirited fun driving, and I am very pleased with my KYBs.
they are a good shock for the price...I drive the autobahn daily and do alot of spirited driving in the countryside, and about 10 percent track events and they hold up fine!
the monroematics suck in my opinion but they where put on by a previous owner who knows how long ago and have to be beat up bad. i would like to put on the stock bilsteins since that is what was on it from gm.
This may be true in CA., but not where I'm from. Speeds of 70+ are legal here.
As for shocks I'd go with either Bilstein's or Koni's. I've found KYB's to be harsh.
Al.
I've only had one set of KYBs many years ago in a rwd car that was light in the rear (probably unlike the C4). The gas struts up front were fine; the gas shocks in the rear were either too much or too stiff. On a certain road, they caused the car to porpoise badly over tar strips, separations.
I was told by a pro road racer of my model that it was too much shock for the rear. He recommended (are you ready for this one?): go to Sears and get their gas shock for the rear at about 15 each, that was installed priced. I did, with less than 500 miles on the KYB rears. It improved handling, no porpoising, generally a very good, long lasting shock. Of course, that was back when Sears actually put their name on a shock. Times change. I suppose KYB may have also, but I've managed to stick with other names like Koni, Tokico, etc.
