Default Engine weight - LT-1 vs LT-4

I read that the LT-1 engine weighs 785 lbs and the LT-4 weighs 1003 lbs. Is this true and if so, why? They both have cast iron blocks and aluminum heads.

That information you read has to be wrong.

The motors are so close. What could possibly account for that much extra weight? It's not like the LT4 has iron heads... What gets me is the weight is listed this way on the CAC link above...

This has been discussed many times before. The info on that site is wrong as to the weight of the engines.

* Note: These numbers are courtesy of GM Powertrain and come from the Mass Group at General Motors. They may not be 100% accurate.

This is from the bottom of the above link. It is almost like somebody weighed it wet with all the accessories attached including bell housing and clutch assy.

Both those numbers are wrong. An all iron SBC doesn't weigh that much. And there certainly could not be more than the most negligible difference between an LT1 and 4.
