89 feels like it is getting backed up and I want to free up the exhaust a bit. Reminder that the 89 has the pre-cats as well as the cat.
My question is will I be legal in Pennsylvania if I replace the front Y-Pipe with pre-cats with Y-pipe with no pre-cats. Then use a high flow cat in the back.
If legal, or at least if it will pass the emissions test with this setup, any recommendations on where to pick up the parts? Saw this site, does anyone have any experience with them?
Replacing the the pre-cats and main cat with a hi-flow 3-stage main cat is 49-states (sorry Left Coast guys) legal. And you will release some power and better sound by eliminating the pre-cats. Both Random Tech. and Car Sound make hi-flow cats.
I purchased that front Y from MAM but it was mangled when it arrived so I returned it and had a local shop custom build one.
don't know about pa emmisions but it should pass the sniff test without precats if the engine is properly tuned and warmed up but if they do a visual you could have a problem. i am currentlly running the precatless y pipe from mad, fits perfect, bolt-in replacement might as well go with a highflow main if you swap the y

I have had a Random Technology high flow cat and no pre-cats on my 89 for about 10 years now. It passes Ohio emissions with no problem at all. I had the same problem as 65Z01 with the MAD high flow y-pipe -- I got two of them and they were both mangled. I ended up going with the "factory replacement" pre-cat eliminator Y-pipe that was used on 86 Canadian export Corvettes.
i just finished gutting my precats and installing a new main cat and muffler elims. sounds awesome. other than my freshly aquired flash burn (short sleeves), everything went off without a hitch. be carefull not to break the manifold studs.....i broke 5 of them.
