My A/T temp regularly reaches above 200-220 and occasionally climbs to 240-250 on hot days in traffic. As some of you may know, I had a problem with the fluid boiling and spilling out onto my headers/cats when road racing a week ago with fluid temps reaching 250 deg F. I figure it is time for a fluid and filter change to a synthetic like Redline or Mobile 1 to handle the extra heat the tranny seams to be producing. I am not going to be doing much more if any road racing with the auto tranny but will definately be doing more drag racing. I dont plan on installing a tranny cooler at this time. However, I want to do this myself if possible. The car has 50k mi on it.
1. Would doing this potentially harm my 700r4?
2. Should I use the synthetics or stick with the dextron III?
3. Is this a relatively straight forward task to do? I was reading in my Chilton's manual and it didnt seem too bad.
Also, do i need to do a flush in order to get the old fluid completely out or can i just remove the pan, drain, replace the filter, and re-fill with the synthetic stuff? The current fluid seems okay since it is still red-ish in color (no brown color or bad smell) and isn't too old.

To do a complete flush takes around 14 quarts. Pulling the pan and refilling is around 2-3 quarts. Transmission shops can easily do a complete fluid flush and filter replacement for around $150-$175 using Dexron III fluid. Synthetic fluid will cost more.
I would certainly add a tranny cooler. There are models that don't take up a lot of room and will definitely help. You should also consider installing a shift kit like the TransGo shift kit. It will help with quicker and firmer shifts and help to cut wear on the clutches.

I wasnt aware of the affordability of trans coolers. Is there a specific one that is recommended for LT1 corvettes or works well? How hard are they to install? Where does it mount and does anyone have pics of their install? This may be the way to go for me.
