Default Distributor replace

Looks like I'm going to have to replace my distributor. 1990 L98 with 94k on the clock. Whats the best way to go? I'm doing most of the free/cheap mods everyone here talks about plus a full 21/2 dual system, de-catted with headers. Do I go for the standard replacement or do I go for a hi performance replacement to help things along? If I go this way what are the alternatives and what kind of improvement should I expect? Thanks in advance

I have been running a stock gm distributor for years. I installed a new accel module and a new coil. Once every 5 years I swap out these 2. The stock distributor has allowed me to easily turn 6k and light off a 10.5 :1 383 that often gets a 150 hp shot of spray. In my opinion a better dist is not needed. However, you cannot argue with the quality of msd units. They look good enough to eat!

Hi 1990C4,
I changed the coil, cap, rotor and module with Performance Distributor items a few years ago. I didn't notice major improvements, maybe it was a little stronger at the top end, but the main improvement was that it started as soon as you hit the key. No cranking time at all!
Whats wrong with your dissy? you can get most parts to service it, just make sure if you do replace it, you get one with the melonised gear. part#10456413, or you will have gear wear problems with your cam. Another route is a bronze or polymer gear, but it is much simpler to keep it stock and add upgrades if needed.

I replaced my stock distributer (19990 L98) with the MSD 8366 which uses an external MSD blaster coil and a required wiring harness adapter from www.jimsperformance.com. Jim's a great guy who will help you if you need it.
Total cost was about $400.00.
