Default Where to buy engine, engine choices?

Friends -88 vette engine overheated last summer and suffered a complete shutdown. Now he's looking to rebuild the engine but the initial cost of rebuild is estimated over 2000$.... We started to think about buying a complete new engine for his vette. Do you know where would be a good place to start looking for a new engine? What would be a good replacement for original L-98 engine? I see Jeg's High Performance is selling some engines...

I found this one from Jeg's website:

GM Performance Parts 350ci / 330hp ''350 H.O.'' Engine

How "bolt on" this engine really is? Are the original parts compatible with this engine, TPI intake, water pump, distributor and such...

Any experiences with this engine?

You need a vortec baseplate. and you shuld use a carb to reach the advertised HP. Look also at the camshaft installed. Vortec heads installed are cast iron. 88 vette has the aliminum heads.
A stock replacemement is the ZZ4 (you need only to swap the the water pump and it has the corvette D port alu heads. can be used with the stock fuel inj system.
I know, because I considered the ZZ$ 3 years ago...then I opted for a rebuild.

P.S. www.sdpc2000.com is a good source.

Your stuff will bolt right on to any GM crate small block that does not have vortec heads. The ZZ-4 is a natural replacement. But you will not realize the 355 rated HP without changing induction to something that flows more air than the stock TPI. Lots of forum members swear by the Superram although I hear it is a pain to install. At the very least, get an aftermaket intake manifold with large tube runners (TPIS, Accel, Arizona speed, Edelbrock...I am familiar with TPIS induction and was very happy). The large tube runners/manifolds should be good for up to around 375hp, but are still somewhat limited in upper rpm's, like over 5,000. I believe SR's will rev and make power to 5800-6000. I am sure others will chime in with more accrurate info on SR.

Also take a look at www.golensengineservice.com and www.diabolicalperformance.com Choices, choices! Have fun trying to pick something out of the candy stores!
