Went for a drive yesterday. Put in a CD and ............no sound except a whine. Well, just damn. Radio stations freqs come up, antenna goes up and still no sound (or whine). Got back and checked the Helms and if I've done the diagnostics correctly, it points to the Amp relay under the DS knee bolster. Where can I get this relay? AutoZone? Advance Auto?
you should be able to get one form any autoparts store.. I got mine for my 91 from autozone..but my car did the same thing it was the turner under the passenger side..
Is there an alternate location for the amp relay on a 91? I pulled the knee bolster and metal plate. Just to the right of the colunm is a two place relay holder. Per the Helms manual, the amp relay is in the one next to the column. I have nothing in that slot. No harness, no relay, nothing. WTF is up with that.
I think the diagram/picture in the book is wrong. There are two relays to the right of the steering column. One is the Bose relay the other one is used for the 2nd fuel pump used by the ZR1 so that one is missing on your car.
For testing, you can just swap one of the relays on the left side of the steering column. There are two of them.
One is for the AC Clutch and the other one is the starter enable relaly. All 3 relays are the same.
OK then. Pulled one of the three relays from the left of the column and swapped with the one on the right. No joy. Head unit appears to work fine (powers up, accepts CDs, changes stations) but all I get from the speakers is a whine.
As was mentioned, probably the CDM/Tuner is bad.
It contains the pre amp for the speakers.
It's a silver colored metal box located above the passengerside foot well area about 8 inches x 4 inches.
Very hard to remove. Easier if you remove the passenger side seat and track so you can lay on your back.
Disconnect the battery cable.
Once the plastic hush panel is removed, there are 4 or 5 wiring hanesses attached/clipped onto the bottom of a black plastic tray. Once those are disconnected there are two nuts on the side you loosen.
Note: Two of the harnesses are keyed the same. So mark the harness pairs before you seperate them.
The tray is hinged. There are 5 small electrical connects 2 on one side and 3 on the other side of the CDM. The antenna lead also needs to be pulled. It's kind of hidden a the top right side of the CDM and pulls off.
I'd say on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most difficult, I'd rate pulling and reinstalling the CDM an 8.
If you do replace the CDM there are two types.
One is for the Delco system and the other one is for the Bose system.
