Brakes carmelized?
My other car (an old celica) has squeeking back brakes. The front brakes are discs and the back brakes are drum brakes. It was squeeking real bad, I replaced the front brakes, and when I went to replace the back breaks they were almost as thick as the new ones so I left em alone.
The breaks still squeek in the back but the car brakes fine. My uncle suggested the breaks have hardened and carmelized because I drove the car a few times with the parking break up. My question is, are hardend brakes still effective? I don't really mind the squeaking but if it is not safe it is not a big deal for me to replace them.

Sounds to me like your shoes/pads are too hard for your application. Deglazing might help, worth a try.
