ATF-interesting if its true
I was at a shop the other day, & I asked a question about power steering fluid (which was answered in another thread), & we got to talking about ATF for the C4`s. I asked the difference between DexronIII, & Mercon V, & was told by the mechanics there that there would be no problem using the Mercon in my 700r4. They said that GM spec. fluid makes the trans shift smooth, & soft, whereas if I filled the trans with Mercon, it would more or less bang into gear, sort of like having a poor mans shift kit. They also went on to state that B&M racing tranny fluid is nothing more than Mercon fluid dyed purple. They said changing to the Mercon fluid would not hurt the GM trannys at all. Like I said---Interesting if true

Yep, when I bracket raced for years, this was a commonly discussed trick to get a TH 350/400 to shift harder. I always preferred to have the transmissions built to do what I wanted.
Mercon I is pretty much the same a Dextron. Type F is what the shop meant. B&M fluid make it shift even firmer. It has more than twice the friction increase compared to type F.
You would probable be bet off using Dextron III since it has better lubrication properties then earlier Dextron and Type F.
Also Mercon V will make your make shift even softer since it was designed to fix ford shifting problem.
