what does it mean to be "one tooth off" in regards to setting the timing. All I did is put the car to top dead center and try and align the rotor to number one. Then i fired up the car and turned the Dist. till it sounded about right. How do I properly time the car and make sure the Dist is not off. I am going to buy a timinig light from the autoparts store today. Waht should my timing be for a 383 stroker putting out about 350 horsepower. I have all the fun parts on it like larger heads, headers, whole Superram setup, rolling rockers, 30 pd ford inject, etc. Also, I live in California so it will need to pass the timing light test.

Disconnect the ESC wire and set the base timing to whatever the tuner calibrated your chip for.

Unless I misunderstood your question, I think this is what you are looking for. This is what I have done on my '87.

I am assuming you pulled your distributor and reinserted it. There is a helical gear on the end of the shaft that goes into the motor. When you pulled the distributor, you should have have marked the rotor
position when it stopped as you lifted the dist. and then reinserted the dist. with the rotor in that position. If you didn't, you may have set it back in one "tooth" or "spline", off. To correct, lift dist. back out of engine.

Remove number 1 sparkplug. Put finger over number 1 sparkplug hole and have someone slowly crank (tap) engine until you feel compression.

Align timing mark on pulley to "o" on engine timing indicator.

Turn rotor on dist. to point between number 1 and number 8 spark plug towers on the dist. cap.

Set distributor back in engine and connect ignition feed wire. Install cap and plug wires.
