Default flywheel question

My car had been making a screeching sound when i started it. I just found out that a tooth is missing from my flywheel. Is that going to be a problem? Other than the noise it makes right when I start it, there are not other noticible problems occuring. How much does it typically cost to get a flywheel replaced? I can't do the work myself.

Car info: 91 auto with 94k.

Well, it's not going to get any better.....
It can damage the starter gear, that's about all.
You are probably looking at a minimum of $1000 for a new DM flywheel and the labor to install it.
Sorry I had to be the bearer of bad news.

Any idea how long a starter might last with a broken flywheel? I have a 1 year parts and labor warrenty on my new starter that I had installed last week. I guess I better keep that receipt in a safe place.

Hmmm, rocco, is that $1k cost for the flywheel including the rest of the clutch assemby, bearings, facings, etc.? or is that just the flywheel + install? Thanks!

Wait a minute, didn't he say it was an auto? That said, he'll need a new flex plate. Still, mega bucks to remove the tranny to get at it. I can tell you how much it cost to remove and rebuild a Durango auto tranny, $2300.

Figure $50 to buy a new flexplate. You can spend less. In my area $250 labor to r&i trans. Throw in 50 bucks to replace rear main seal on crankshaft amd front pump seal on trans. These are what I feel are average prices to do the job.

Man, those are some kind of reasonable rates in Nanticoke, Pete K.

I guess living in nowheresville has certain small advantages. Most small shops around here get $40 an hr. Even the dealerships only get about $60. Unfortunately the rate of pay is overall is terrible. $35k in my area is a darn good annual salary.

I drove with a missing flywheel tooth once years ago. If the motor happened to stop at just that spot the starter would just spin and not catch. I would have to turn the motor a little using the belt to get past that spot. And you know all about Murphy's law don't you?
