Default Clutch slave cylinder mod question

I am in the process of putting in a new clutch slave and master and figure I will do the "Clutch slave cylinder mod" while I'm at it.

As I understand it I have to drill out the small restrictor in the inlet port of the slave cylinder. Thing is, whilst looking at my new master cylinder it also has an equivalent size restrictor in the outlet port.

To my way of thinking it would make sense to drill both the clutch master outlet AND the clutch slave inlet port... But I have never heard of anyone touching the clutch master whilst doing this mod...

Any ideas?

It's just my opinion but I wouldn't touch either one of them. I would think that you would have warranty issues if for some reason you had to put in a claim. I say this because I've returned a couple of slaves over the last couple of years. Just my $0.02.

What size do you drill them to?

My concern would be for metal filings getting into the seals.

I have to look up the size but you can see what you have to drill out just by looking at the slave. I will look when I get a chance (in the next day or so and let you know).

Iron Mike - I hear you on the warranty issue but over here in Australia (and have heard of bad batches of slave cylinders) but it is not something I am going to worry about too much - the cost of sending it back etc is such a pita I would probably get it resleeved or similar (locally) if there were any problems before trying to make a warranty claim.

I intend to have the car back on the road in the next 48 hours so at the moment I will either take a punt and drill both out or just leave them (probably the latter). It does seem curious though that nobody seems to have modded their master cylinder when that looks to have an identical size restrictor to the slave...

Does any know of a mod similar to this for the 4+3 setup? Sounds like a great idea.

I did it with no problems. Used brake cleaner to thoroughly flush the slave afterward.

My understanding is it primarily helps going into 3rd or higher on a run thru the gears-fluid starts to become restricted and the clutch begins to not be full engaged...slippage.

I did the slave cylinder mod too about 2 years ago. No problems here.

Thank you all, there is alot of good info here. Can anyone see my point about not drilling out the master cylinder outlet port as well?

That is the main reason I was thinking of doing it. I heard the same thing here and between hearing that and my occasionally getting clutch slip in 3rd and 4th when giving my car a hard time on the dragstrip I thought the slave might have been a factor and thought I'd do the mod...

Mind you I also have a solid clutch disc with my single mass conversion so am a little concerned this mod might make my tranny seem more "grabby" (as mentioned in the provided link above). I'm going to think about it while at work today before I go to install the slave and master tonight as I have just under 2 days to get it all back together and ready to drive...

That's why I would strip the slave down before I drilled it out.
