Default Weirdness with 89 Dashboard Digital Display

Two weird things.
1. First time ever, my water temp readout went dim and stayed there for a few minutes, then came back to bright. All other readouts normal brightness. Any thoughts?
2. When I get on it hard, the tach goes up with the rpm to a point, then falls off as the rpm continues to increase. I haven't studied it because I am on it all the way in first when it happens, but my best glance shows no more than 3200 and I know I am a couple grand more than that. Any thoughts?

Could be several things: The tach filter is intermittent and needs to be replaced, though usually when they go - they go and you don't have any Tach display other than "0". The connector pins between the circuit boards might need cleaning. You can take it apart and try to clean them. The bulb illuminating the coolant temp is failing. It's replaceable and it can be done with the cluster in the car, though I like to remove it. My overall experience with trying to repair anything other than a burned out bulb has generally resulted in an exchange with the Dealer for a rebuilt one (or pulling one out of a total of the same Year).
