I had my alternator off ot try to adjust my rockers. I've been hearing some ticking, and wanted to see if I needed a little adjustment.
Anyway, I was in to big of a hurry and did not disconnect the battery cable. I accidetally touched the red wire from the alternator and grounded to a mounting bracket while I was trying to get leverage to turn the crank over. Lots of smoke and sizzle from somewhere behind the battery.
I pulled the battery and and thought I'd see some burned wires or fusible links, but nothing was found. Car runs, but has electrical problems. Volt meter shows discharge, and I have all sorts of lights on the d.i.c. panel. I think this is just because of low voltage, but not sure. Anyone have any Ideas? I'm a wreck over the whole thing and sure hope someone can help. I've always hated auto electrical problems, and this looks like a big one.
You probably fried a fusable link. I have seen them burn up internally with no external signs. you need an ohm meter to find the one that fried. The last one I found - I was pulling on a wire and there was no metal in the sheath.
Thats what I was kind of hoping. I couldn't see any sign of any burning at all. Is there a chance it went any deeper than that, or would the link catch it most of the time?

Hope fully it caught it thats what they are for. I would be worried if everything works though. Mabey just the one to the Alt went are you showing it charging the battery. If it is that the engine will die due to battery discharge.
I did the same thing with a 96 Vette. Identical. It burnt up a fuse, injector fuse, and the white smoke showed no external signs behind the battery. Other than the fuse for the one bank of injectors, we could never find the damaged goods.
