Default 4L60E shifting sequence????

I posted something similar to this a few days ago, but didn't get the answer I was looking for.
So here's my question, on a '96 Vette with a 4L60E transmission, is the trans. suppose to start off in 1st gear and shift to 2nd or is it to start off in 2nd and shift to 3rd when the shifter is in OD position?
What in the trans. tells it to go to 1st gear?
What appears to be happening is the trans. is starting off in 2nd no matter what position the shifter is in, unless the car is just started moving and I put the accelerator pedal to the floor, then it will drop into 1st gear.
Is there an adjustment I'm missing? This is a fresh rebuild, so I going to call the builder tommorrow and get his thoughts.
If any members have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
JTHVETTE

You have a problem and I hope your rebuilder is a good one most aren't.
It is operated by computer and adjustment at the
ASR.Make sure the throttle is opening all the way .
To hard to explain how cridical this trans is compaired to the others out there.

It does not matter where you have the shifter (1st , 2nd, D or OD).
In 1st you should only go in 1st
if you put in 2 you should start in 1st and thaen it will shift in 2nd and it shoud NOT go in 3rd.
if you put in D , it start in 1 then shift in 2 then shift in 3rd . it shoud NOT go in 4th.
if you put in OD, it start in 1 then shift in 2 then shift in 3rd and then it shift in 4. when you lift the gas pedal to complete stop it should downshift itself.
Sorry to say that you have a problem even if when you floor it it downshift to 1st.

I undertand fully what you are saying, but what would cause this to happen as I described?

A damaged manual valve, damaged valve body, probably a few other things could cause this as well.

If you put the shifter in 1, does she just stay in 1st?

How's Reverse?

Do 1st and reverse act odd in any way?

Since it's a fresh rebuild, I'd take it back right away and give them a chance to make it right.

Jay

I have the same car; 96 LT-1 (stock) A4. The way mine is adjusted, I can casually pull the gear shift all the way back and it APPEARS to be in "1", but in reality, it is not ALL the way back (and still in "2"). I literally have to pull it and hold it back to really feel the "click" that it is in "1".

You may have the same (simple) problem....it's an easy fix.

I may or may not tweak the adjustment, since I don't have a need to lock it in "1".

Ok, common problem...but the car even with the lever in 2 starts in first..
This can't be the problem of JTHVETTE

I got out my "GM Shop manuals" and read the section on the 4L60E trans. and found out that there several items I need to check, both
mechanical and electrical that can cause the problem that I have in question. The scanning, I am going to see if my "Mac Tools handheld scanner" will do the job or I am going to use a "laptop"computer.
Thanks for your help, keep it coming!

JTHVETTE

I hope it's something simple!!!!!!!!!
