A/C Problem ?

A/C Problem ?
So I'm driving to Bradenton Motorsports Park for the Saturday night program...it's a 2.5 hour drive each way...it is Africa hot so I have the A/C on...about 1.5 hours into the trip, I'm cruising at 75 mph and I feel a shimmy in the steering wheel and vibration through the gas pedal...
I thought it might be the roadway but a lane change didn't stop it...by chance, I turned off the A/C and it went away after about a mile...5 minutes later I turned the A/C back on and all was fine...about 45 minute later I exit the interstate and head to the track...within a mile it starts again...I turn off the A/C and it stops within another mile...
I did not run the A/C anymore that day and had no problems...I didn't want to shred a the belt if the compressor was trying to lock up...my 93 has the ribs on both sides and they are pretty much impossible to get on short notice...
Anyone have any clues as to what this might be ?....has this happened to anyone else ?...thanks...

p.s. I was racing for a Wally but went out in the third round on a .002 red light...ran dead on too...arrrrrrrgh...
