Default brief stall when slowing down

drove to the jersey shore the other day,,,,very very hot and humid day,,,about 105 with the heat index,,,the drive was about 70 miles,,,,after arriving in town,,,seemed every time i came to a stop light,,,i could feel i was about to shut down,,,i would give a little gas to avoid shutting down,,,also check engine light came on, for a brief half-second,then never returned again,,,anyway...on the ride home the next day,car ran sweet,,,,is this normal when driving on extreme hot days,,,thanks alot.....1990 vert, auto,,,,,,,,,,

It might be your IAC ( idle air compensator) if you were running your air, it is a stepper motor that runs in and out to compensate for the loading on the engine such as letting off the throttle and running your AC when the compressor kicks on and off... If it is not working that is what caused you to have to keep you foot light on the throttle at a stop

Some times they just get carboned up, I'd pull it out and see if it is clean or not.

That should solve your problem...

Ditto about the IAC motor. Mine just went bad, it won't hold idle. I checked per the troubleshooting guide in the shop manual.

Watch out for parking tickets at the shore. I got stuck for $35. for being 5 minutes late to feed the parking meter in Seaside Heights.

I kind of had the same problem only mine only got worse. The service engine soon light would go on and off and it smelled like it was running rich. I checked for codes but got none. It ended up being the ECM. Just thought I would throw this out as a possibilty.

Is it modded?

Sounds like your IAC counts are out of wack, I would start by cleaning the IAC and the throttle body good. If that doesn't correct it I would put a scan tool on it and adjust the TB blades to see 20-30 counts at a warm idle. That will leave you enough room for the IAC to stay in range at all times.

Alvin,

Also as posted above depending on what the IAC is doing it will set a cade saying the IAC was commanded to go lower or higher... and the service light will come on...
