In planning an upgrade on my 84 it looks like the best bank for is a pair of L98s. How would I find out if the exhisting heads are 6 or 7 hole without pulling them ? Thanks
The later L98 heads will fit that block... and should fit the crossfire... but I wouldn't put the stock xfire intake back on. I would consider getting an upgrade to that intake. The xfire, by it's very nature isn't the problem - the intake manifold is.
there are options... the xfire people will be in, I am sure. there is one, the name escapes me, that uses a modifed aluminum intake to do the job. much better flow rates.
new heads would mean zip if you kept the factory intake.

You are probably referrng to the X-Ram. Although I have no proof, I strongly doubt that the X-Ram is as good, let alone better than my home ported stock Crossfire manifold.
I'm in the middle of upgrading my '90 L98 and I originally planned to use my stock L98 heads and have them ported by TPIS. They told me the flow would be 270 at 0.600 lift after they ported them. I figured that was pretty good flow, particularly for the size intake on the L98 heads which would yield a higher velocity and promote torque. This also seemed more convenient since the combustion chamber on the L98 heads is 58 cc and the smallest I was seeing in aftermarket heads was 64 cc and I didn't want to lose compression, shave my block or mill the heads.
They advertise an exchange where they will give you a set of heads already done and you just give them yours in exchange (plus their fee of $1250 of course), problem is when I went to do the exchange, they said they didn't have any heads to give me, and it would be a minimum of 2 weeks to machine my heads. Long story short, I ended up buying new Dart heads and shaving my block to maintain my compression ratio.
If you are interested in the L-98 heads, let me know. I have a set already cleaned up and ready to go that I can make you a deal on. For what it's worth, I also had quotes for having my L-98 heads ported elsewhere for about half the price, but also 2 weeks minimum.
