As far as the $$$ adventure goes, if you do it yourself minimal $$$ more adventure. If you get your mechanic to do it lotsa $$$ and no adventure. The gasket's not expensive but you'll pay a lot for the labor. Heck for the same price as paying a mechanic to do your gasket you could slap on some long tubes while you've got everything apart if you haven't already.
sorry about your pending misfortune, but $$ solves all this mess and shortly afterwards you'll forget about it and will be back in the saddle; life will be good.
