I have a 92 Coupe and the front driver side caliper has been making a
clunking sound whenever the brakes are applied and now has gotten where you can hear the caliper clunking while driving. I understand that they are floating calipers but this is not right, I need to know if it is maybe the pads, the caliper, or what do I need to fix on this??
Please help!!!
Check the pin (at the bottom of the caliper) that is holding the whole mess together. The caliper slides along this pin and if it is worn, you will have excess play. When I changed out my pads (new circlips, too), I put new pins and new pad retaining springs. So far, no clunks.
BTW... my fronts would clunk every once in a while, and when I replaced the pads, I realized just how worn those pins were.
Your problem is the spring at the top of the pad are missing, the pad should be tight in the caliper, the spring applies force downward against the pin.
Still, I thought a brake job called for new pins and new caliper mount bracket bolts each time? I wonder how many shops actually use new bolts and pins or just re-intall the old ones and charge the customer as if they installed new pins and bolts?
There is no need to remove the bolts to R & R the brake pads.
The pins does not need to be replaced each time you change pads, we change pads at least twice a year and only change the pins when we install new calipers.
We have had the calipers off our '89 autocross car at least 25 times and I still use the original bolts.
Did a brake job on my '94 and forgot to put the bottom spring clips on (remembered the tops) and it made the clunking noise. Some pads come with them already installed. I am 99% sure this is your problem.
I bought the anti rattle clips at Advance ,online. They clip to the bottom side of the pads and push the caliper up tight when you swing it back into position. That is your problem they do not "float" with the right clips.Look at the other side and see if you see the clips.
