I have a 94 vette that uses the nonvented opti.
I am sure it does not use a dowel pin. When I have installed other optis it can only go one way and because it is indexed I will not force it, it will just slip without effort when aligned properly.

That is the key it must slide in easily. It is good to do it twice to make sure.I usually describe the "poping" sound it makes when it hits the timing cover because if it slides in right it will hit it hard enough to make it.

The measurements that dynaspark suggests will tell you if anything under the timing covers is worn.If you installed the Opti right( as it appears you did) then pass the measurements it should be all good.
