Default crunching wheel noise

My left rear wheel has a crunching noise like metal grinding against metal. I thought u joints but they seem ok and the noise sounds like it's in the hub. Perhaps hub bearings broken up and making noise? Or could it have something to do with the abs sensor ring on spindle? Does the spindle have to be pressed out after removing the spindle nut?
In order to remove jack shafts I guess I need remove the spring bolt and alinement rod to move hub bracket out. what a pita if all I wanted to do was replace u joints.
Anyone done this before and know any short cuts without causing more problems?

I had the same problem on my dad's '90. It was the needle bearings on the half shafts. When i finally got the cover off, all the needles were gone.

I really gotta think it's your half-shaft joints. They may look ok at a visual inspection, but you gotta pull em to find out for sure. Form the description, I'd bet a steak dinner next time you're in town, that it's gonna be the half-shaft U Joints

I drove around with this condition for a long time before it finally became obvious

There have been several threads on the topic, some are really
well detailed how-tos with great photos. You could search for all of them
and take your pick or just go to Scorp508's write-up - there is a link
to this from the C4 Tech Tips.

It is probably mentioned in the write up, but bears repeating. Use paint
or a Sharpie to mark relationships between yokes so that the shafts go
back into the same position they came out of.

If you need recommendations for U-Joints, there is lots of info in the
archives. Might want to establish whether coated or uncoated ones
are required.

Lots of other good info in the C4 Tech FAQ.
