My AC blows nice and cold, a burn't smell, some squealing then the fuse blows. The compressor turns freely but is very hot. I have been searching for answers but come up short. I am now beliving that the clutch is to blame. A friend told me that they have a specific gap to run properly. Can this be adjusted? If I get a new clutch can I install it myself or must the new clutch be adjusted? I understand why the clutch is needed but not how it works. If someone could shed some light on this I would be very greatful. Thanks Pete
Ps. Carlisle is coming up fast and AC would be great for the ride!
Thanks Agent 86 for the PDF looks as though I'll be taking it to the shop. My Haynes manual does not show near that much, but your PDF makes it look like special tools are needed that I don't have. I like doing things myself but this is out of my hands! Thanks for the info now I can pay a shop with no reservations.Pete
If it's an '89 the compressor is a different model than the '86 and the clutch assembly is fairly easy to replace. Remove the belt and then grasp the outer hub with oil filter wrench pliers or a strap wrench and use a socket on the 10mm bolt to remove it. Gently pry off the hub keeping your hand underneath it to catch any shims. The pulley and coil are held on with snap rings. You should be able to see them and some snap ring pliers will take them right off. Remove the pulley first, coil second. Installation is the reverse. Shim the outer hub so that there is a .020 clearance between it and the pulley. If you're buying an OEM clutch assembly, you'll need to obtain the shim kit (about 9 bucks for 5 or 6 1/4 inch washers). Aftermarket assemblies usually include them. Do be sure that the snap rings are fully seated otherwise the pulley will come off and make a mess of everything. Torque the retaining bolt to 10 ft/lbs.
