Default Camshaft HP Gains?

I recently upgraded my camshaft, and I'm finally getting around to doing the dyno tuning. Hoping to do the tune next Saturday.

My old camshaft made 358/342 at the wheels. Anyone care to guess the gains/losses from the new camshaft?

Old cam: 212/224 521/536 112 lsa
New cam: 224/230 605/622 112 lsa

I also upgraded the opti (95/96), installed a Cloyes DR timing set, and installed Comp Cams bee hive springs, while the car was down.

If all goes well Saturday and if work permits, I plan on hitting the track the next Tuesday.

Do you have flow numbers for the heads?

No I don't. CNC Cylinder Heads did the porting, and for some reason Pete isn't big on giving out flow numbers. His belief is, retaining port velocity over peak flow numbers. But, I did read on another site where someone had these heads flow tested, and got 270/199 @ .600 lift.

I've seen a lot of heads ported by Pete, he does very good work. With his heads duration is more important than overall lift. Do you know the size of the valves he used?

2.0/1.56

Also, both camshafts are Comp Cams custom grinds from Pete.

Good numbers for the small cam. The heads must have been pretty good. I would expect you to be in the 380-390 range with the new cam tuned in well.

This is a stick car ain't it?

Let us know for sure!!

That's a lot of lift for those valve springs

I'm using the 918's. I spoke to two different tuners before installing the 918's, each said they had set these springs up for .650 lift, and the Comp's recommendation of .600 max lift was very conservative.

I installed my springs at a 1.875 installed height, with a .622 lift, there is a .118 clearance before coil bind and Comp recommends at least .060.

I know I'm am pushing the 918's to the limit, and a set of dual springs would have been safer. But, at this time I really didn't want to pull the heads to have them machined for the dual springs.

I will say, I don't think I've ever driven a car that revs as smoothly as my car with this cam/springs combination.

Wish me luck.

Alvin, it is a 6 speed with 4.10 gears.

I've heard the 4.10's may dyno a little lower than the stock gears. What's you opinion of that statement?

Yeah, it will. not much though.

The big thing that kills dyno numbers are torque convertors.

This is the same cam I have in my 385 except mine has a 113 LSA. I am using the 977-16 springs which came recommended by Comp Cams for this cam. See sig for numbers.

BTW, I think you will see north of 380 with that cam.

I predict you will lose 5-10hp with the new cam.

Default Update

Well after several work related delays. I finally made it to the dyno today. The numbers were pretty good, but I may have hurt the car getting them. Every run at ~5800 rpms the HP would dip and come back at 6200. I tried adding fuel and fuel pressure, didn't help. Checked for spark retard, none. There is a slightly louder ticking noise on the left side, louder than normal. Could it be a loose rocker? Burned plug? Spun rod bearing? Oil and coolant look fine.

Leaving the dyno shop the car was jerking, felt like I had a dead cylinder. As soon as a load is put on the engine it will shake, and has a hard time idling. Limped it home, will be looking into the problem tomorrow.

I did 5 runs each were between 371-374hp and 342-345 tq. Oh, the first run the torque was 398. It broke the tires loose.
Best run was 374/345 (SAE)
