Default TPI conversion.

hey guys,
Im VERY new to the forum. Im Most likely going to be purchasing an 84 Vette sometime in the next week. Its got 67,000 on it, and in pretty good shape. Its bonestock, but thats not going to be too long. The interior is in good cond, aside from the cracked leather seats. but now onto my real question. Im pretty sure the TPI is better than the Crossfire injection. Is there a difference between the TPI on the vettes, and on the 5.7 Camaros? also, do i have to change the wiring harness, to accomidate the TPI, rather than the crossfire? I know about camaros, because i now have an 87 IROC, but i know to change from carb to TPI you need a new wiring harness. Am i going to need one from crossfire to TPI?

If i get a full setup, complete with intake manifold and COMPLETE TPI will anything else need to be done, please give some info.

for everything, is it WORTH the swap?

If you ask me,the answer is NO.its too much work to convert the car over to TPI.That being said its prob cheaper and easier to convert to carb to make excellent HP.

However, that being said, there a forum for these engines and mods that make alot of power with the crossfire.I forget the name but I think its www.crossfire.com

There ARE mods you can do to make it run better than a TPI set up.
Just need to read and research peoples mods they did and see if it suits yours.

If you read the forum alot, youll see over time alot of TPI owners step up to the SuperRam or different intake set up to gain more power. Why?the answer is simple, the TPI makes good torque but cant make the Top end HP the other intakes can.So to me,youll be trying to take a 2 step forwards then one step back.

Adding new info,I dont think the link I provided is the correct one.Maybe someone else will post the right one.

If you want to do anything other then mod the xfire, you should go with pure aftermarket.

Something like the Accel/DFI or Holley systems. They are better then TPI, will be more reliable in the long run, and will be easier to install.

I would also get aluminum heads (D-port 113s are a good option on the cheap).

Another option... can you say "LS2"??? yea! Why not a modern 5.7l or 6.0l LSx motor? You can pick up LS1s from salvage yards for cheap WITH and ECM!!!! add a cam, some mild porting, modern headers, cats, xpipe, you have a rocket.

You will want to upgrade the rear axle, tho. All 1984 Vettes have the Dana 36. Starting in 1985, they added the Dana 44 for the manual cars. You want to find a D44. They ain't cheap, but they are worth it.

There is so much you can do with a 1984... just sooooo much.

wow, you guys are very helpful, thank you.
about switching to a modern LS-X motor, believe me, my dad is a vette fanatic, he would do anything but swap the engine. hes an old school guy, he doesnt really want to believe in the new engines. Its awesome because me purchasing this car, is like a bonus considering he loves vettes and would work on them all the time. the only thing is, he knows the OLD vettes, like C2s, but he knows the chevy system fairly well.hes just not very up to date with the TPI and crossfire stuff.
As for going with something like the stealth ram or something, there REALLLLY expensive, ive looked at them for my Camaro.
I dont think i want t swap the engine, so i mean, should i change to TPI, or should i keep crossfire and just mod it from there? what kind of mods should i do to help it perform better. My dad is buying me this car, because he loves vettes, and wants to have one in the house soo bad. besides its a STEAL. 4700 for an 1984, NEVER HIT, the clear coat is still on the paint, runs perfect and only 67000 on it. i love it only cracked leather seats, which is the least of my problems hah

so what should i do?

EDIT: How bout the X-RAM. its a direct bolt on to the Crossfire and claim 40% better airflow. let me know if anyone knows about this?

I'd keep the crossram on there. Its just a cool looking deal, another example of Corvette progressin; that, and you just don't see too many of them around these days. There are a handful of guys here on the forum who have high mileage Crossfires that are running 13's on worn out bottom ends! I say mod it, keep it stock looking, then take your dad for a ride. I used to be 100% old school too until a cutomer took me for a ride in a lightly modded LT1 (Ruby). Then I got to experience LS1 power. There's no denying that a well set up FI motor is where its at!

yeah i think im going to. I found an intake for it though, check it out. With 1.6 roller rockers and a Hydraulic Roller cam it seems like it will run even BETTER than a TPI would. check it out.
www.x-ram.com

does anyone knwo about this?

Also, can someone reccemend me a good hydr. roller cam for an '84 vette. i dont really know whats needed. i was looking into this: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...57&prmenbr=361

let me know which one would be best for a vette.

Some guys like to use the Crane 2032 Compucam. Comp has a line of XE fuel injected cams out. Be conservative on the cam timing, and use a good head. No bigger than 180cc IMO. 2.5"exhaust, and heavy intake porting, you'll have a good street runner.
Edit: those powermax cams are way too big. Talk to CFI-EFI or a few others, they will point you in the right direction

From that link...
For these reasons, we suggest that the rockers only be changed with a set of 1.6:1 Full Roller Rockers. These rockers will produce a little more lift and duration in the valves, increase the fuel and air charge to the cylinders. They will also greatly increase the low end torque and produce 23 to 28 hp gains. Hard to get that changing the entire cam!

Every engine is different and in various levels of condition, but the average show 1 to 1.5 seconds quicker in the quarter mile and 8 to 12 mph fasterThese guys are smoking some good stuff!

Don't believe everything you read...

yeah im not going by what exactly they say, but a cam change is something i would do anyways, its a good, not so expensive upgrade with good HP gains. and the rockers are good to replace with rollers anyways.

EDIT: I think what they mean is with the roller rockers, cam and the X-RAM. not just the cam.

Don't be so sure. Technically, port injection is more advanced than TBI, but in terms of performance, there isn't a whole lot of difference. It is possible I might be proved wrong, but I feel the stock Crossfire has as much if not more potential as the TPI.

Yes. The Crossfire operates with two fuel injectors. TPIs have eight. That makes both an ECM and a wiring harness change necessary.

Absolutely not! For all the work and expense, there will be precious little, it any, improvement. A carb is a step backward. Don't even... If more performance is desired than is reasonable to expect from a Crossfire, convert to a stand alone or TPI upgrade injection system. Also, do your homework on the X-Ram intake before you decide to invest in it. I have read reports of disappointed owners.

RACE ON!!!
