conventional oil
Look back to the days of 10w40, any motor that was a driver always needed some form of maintenance - valve adj, points, etc. and dont forget carbs.
The new(er) computer controlled cars run better and cleaner -
Todays oils have detergents the old days didnt, the polymers in the 10w40 are more then likely the major contributor to the sludging.
I had a F150 str 6 with 148k on it, used castrol, havoline, QS basically what ever brand name was on special at the time of oil change.
Always used 10w30, the first oil change was between 50 and 75 miles on the OD. This engine ran as good the day I sold it as the day I bought the truck.
You must form an opinion on todys standards and technology. Using old wives tales just doesnt apply to todays advances and technology.
FTR - I have used dino and synthetic in varoius autos through the years
