Default Converters- Random Tech Vs. Dynatech

Anyone have any info on which cat has better flow numbers and performance?

I am looking at the Random Tech High Flow Metallic Converter # 703000
and the Dynatech "Power Cats".

The RT cats are much more expensive- which makes me wonder about the Dynatechs.

They will be going on my 91 ZR1 that currently has full length Watson headers & Corsa exhaust.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, the Dynatech and the RT CATs use virtually the same metallic core. They are identical in core diameter cell count, and length. The body is slightly different in design. But flow characturistics are equal. I have installed several of these CATs in L98, LTx and know of one set in a ZR1 all perform very well. You won't go wrong by saving at least $100 per CAT.

Here are some relative flow numbers:
mfg.................p/n...................cfm
Random Tech....813000..............327
Dynatech.........DTC-78-400300...450
Random Tech....703000..............535

To support 400 hp at the crank you need a total of about 900 cfm exhaust flow.

Well I have the 400 at the crank (car does 350 at the wheels). Are you telling me that the Dynatechs would barely do it- however the RT 703000 cats would give me a little cushion? Are your figures for the 3 inch in/out models?

Thanks very much !
Dan

I saw those numbers from an earlier post and saved them for future reference.

It looks like the Dynatech would be fine for your application. I'm not sure about the specifics on that cat (I assume they are 3" in/out though) but the flow number is right.

A book by David Vizard on SBCs states that it takes about 2.2 cfm of flow for each 1 chp before back pressure begins to absorb power to push out the exhaust gas. A 2 1/2" pipe flows about 560cfm so 2 1/2" true duals would be fine, though 3" duals will be ok too.

When I had my rear Y rebuilt by Mufflex Mufflex (link on my site) I talked with Denny about a very slim line hi-flow cat (3" in/out) but I didn't ask the mfg or p/n. But the cat was a very slim line and would work well under my C4. You might give him a call and get the specifics.

Thanks for the info- any thought on the power difference between the two converter types?
