VATS on a highly-modified 94 Vette
First, I enjoyed meeting a number of forum members at a get-together last Thursday in Clearwater, FL. That's a great gang you have there! Thanks for making a newbie like myself feel right at home.
I need help with the elimination of VATS on my '94 LT1. After reading several threads on VATS in the archives, I remain confused. Given that I am OK with eliminating the VATS system (I'll be using a non-GM key in my new ignition), is it best to buy aftermarket PROM which eliminates the VATS?
My car is basically a street rod project, which will keep the engine, drivetrain, suspension and electronics generally intact, but delete the original doors and rear hatch, and use a non-GM dash-mounted ignition switch in place of the original ignition switch.
I've read enough in the Helms manuals to know the 1994 VATS uses complicated communications between the ECM and CCM, and I've gathered from my reading that it just isn't enough to put some Radio Shack dummy resistors inline to simulate the ignition key.
In a circumstance such as this, is it best to buy an aftermarket PROM? If so, who is the best source, and how does one best go about buying it (do you need VIN, or part nos. from the ECM and CCM, or do you still need to know the resistance of the key).
Thanks in advance! Jim, A.K.A. StealthC4
