I have an 2000 stall with an OEM sized converter. I noticed a pretty loud chatter sound coming from the T/C area. I've never heard T/C chatter before so i'm not sure. It almost sounds like something is rattleing around on the exahust or something. The fluid is still red and doesn't smell burned. I'm thinking that the 5800 RPM shifts may have done it... if it is in fact the T/C. Any thoughts on this?
Check the flexplate for cracks and missing bolts. Both at the crank and torque converter. If you hav chattering in the converter at idle, you have big problems. I doubt that you do. Check the bolts though. Also look carefully at the flexplate for cracks. When a flexplate comes apart, it does it voilently. Check this asap.

I will do this... if the t/c is FUBAR how come the fluid is still lookin new? Maybe it is the flywheel. Thanks
I agree with Pete K. One other possibility after you rule out cracked flex plate and loose bolts etc, is the oil pump and T/C connection. I have seen this twice now where the noise you describe came from the oil pump or the tangs on the T/C. I have seen them sheared off and not engaging the pump correctly and producing a lot of noise. If this is the case you are into a tear down. A good way to track the sound down is with a rod or tube, or stethascope held to the transmission and to your ear. Good luck.
I knew the answer Pete, I just had to ask....I mean I love tearing a 2k dollar tranny apart after 10k miles *super* .... arrrgg thanks for all the info guys! I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

I made it a 1 word answer because I felt your pain. No easy way to say it. Hope it works out for the best. If you are lucky, 2 of the 3 torque converter bolts fell out.
Its an 84 with the mods in my sig... and yes, it was in park when it seemed to make the most "chatter". Haven't driven it since it started making the noise.
I've had my truck make a bad "rattle" when the TC started to go. Would stop rattling when the converter locked up (700R4). I replaced it before the failure went catastrofic
Alright, I unbolted the Torque Converter from the flexplate and started the car. The noise was still there and sounded exactly the same. If the flexplate is cracked/broken would it make the same noise if the torque converter is unbolted from it? Need a reply because its on the lift now.
I got the stethiscope out and discovered a wonderfully violent clack clack on #8 and a slight clack on #2. Oil is almost black after 100 miles. I think the engine is comming out. What is the easiest way to check the flexplate? Do i have to unbolt the bottom bolts of the tranny and drop it a little?

Pull that flexplate completely off, clean it and get some light on it before you start pulling the motor. Those tend to crack around the bolt holes. One thing at a time.
