What year do you have? if it's pre '93, just short out the aldl top right pin with the pin next to it on the left. and it'll flash the codes

If it's later model, you can short the 4th pin from the left in the top row, with the one just below it (i think it was the 4th can't remember to well) and you can go through the codes on your speedo using the eng/met buttons

Above the drivers knee-you short pins A & B on the ALDL, there the top two right hand side pins, turn on ignition-BUT-DO NOT START ENGINE I use a paper clip. In a moment your check engine light (on early c4) or SYS light on later c4s will start to flash. code 12 first, a single flash followed by a double flash-should repeat 3 times
after that you will either get an error code or another string of 12s
meaning no error codes.

On Vettes using OBD1 with a 16 pin DLC connector you should short # 12 ( ccm diagnostic enable) to # 4 or 5 ( both are ground)

By the way the top row starts with # 1 at the left side ( drivers side )
Second row starts with # 9 ( drivers side ) . Just so you have it right.

I have a 94 Vette and done this a lot of times. Hope your Vette has the same conector and OBD1. If you have OBD2 you will need a scanner.

AutoZone has free code reader keys. I keep one in my console to check my codes after the SES light appears.

The 16 pin ADL connector is OBD2
But it still runs on OBD1 software.
If it is like that you can retrieve the codes this way.

Lets make some sense of all this ODBI and ODBII stuff!

1984 to 1994 are OBDI, essentially. I don't remmeber when the term OBD was first used... but that's close enough for government work.

1995 is what I call ODBI.V! It's 1.5! OBDI computer, an extra set of dummy O2s and an OBDII connector.

1996 is full OBDII compliant.

Close but 94/95 are thae same and both have the extra rear O2 and OBDII conecttor. Both 94/95 can pull codes by shorting pin 4 to 12, the codes will display on the center dash LCD.
