With gas going through the roof, I was thinking of buying Reg. gas and adding a octane booster. Is there any hard evidence to back up their claims or am I wasting my time?

Waste of money.
What I do use though is octane additive.
I get this from Torco fuels.
Torco is the official fuel supplier of IHRA and sponors a lot of NHRA and IHRA cars. (you can order Nitro Methane if want)
This the real stuff. You can mix up batches of 110 octane with this stuff.
Boosters on the other hand are just marketing and maybe will increase your 87 octane to 87.1 octane.
Tried putting 89 in my vette with octane boosters... it actully ran like i had 93 in it. Anything less than Shell V-Power causes my engine to do the spit and sputter after i shut it off. So i guess it depends on what brand of booster you buy combined with what brand of gas you get. Just stay away from Citgo... that SH*T has always been like water in my vehicles.
I have an '84 and am running mid range fuel. No rpoblems at all. I guess I'm a little confused though. If you are going to run a lower grade fuel and pay the extra money for the octane booster, how are you saving??

buy some xylene from a paint store. It's the SAME THING that's in the octane boosters. Or tuolene. That's in the cheaper octane boosters. Xylene will up your rating about 5 points. Put in about 12 ounces per tank of gas.
There seems to be a collective scam going on.
The stuff in the little cans, raises octane
five - tenths of an octane unit.
From 87.0 to 87.5 , for example.
If you want Xylene to raise premium to 98 from
93, you need 30% xylene, 70% gas.
