I know there have been many threads on this, but couldn't find them. What lube does everyone use? I've heard that BMW's lube is the best. If so, what do I ask for when I go down to the dealership? Thanks.
There are two schools of thought, that the BWM fill (Castrol TWS 10-60 - the special oil required in the M3 and M5), is too heavy for very cold conditions; or, it's perfect.
I have not had a problem with the Castrol, so I continue to use it. It's also the only other lube that has been tested for durability over the long haul, by www.zfdoc.com. Some swear by Red Line & Royal Purple oils, but I haven't used them.
ZFDoc also suggest replacing the oil every 12k miles (I just change it once a year).
you will need 3 litres, cause the tranny requires a touch more then 2 litres. The remains can be stored for the next job.
A hint - remove the fill plug FIRST. This is because if you get the drain off, and can't get the fill off... see? kinda get screwed.
I would like to change the oil in the ZF6 also. What are the size of the plugs? Are they hexagonal or do you use a wrench? I have only seen one plug but it does not seem to be hexagonal.

The plugs are 17mm hex. You can get a set at Autozone.
Castrol TWS 10w-60 is what I use. It is excellent.
