On my 85 coupe, I am getting a code 52 (CALPAK missing) as well as other intermittent codes 53 (System over voltage) and 54 (Fuel pump voltage low). The last two are intermittent and don't always come up, but every time I do a scqn with my AutoXray, the code 52 shows up. I know it is there, because I replaced the ECM and had to swap the PROM and CALPAK over to the new ECM. The previous ECM was throwing the same codes. If anyone knows of a way to test the CALPAK or even where I can get another one (prefferably new, but a used one that is known to be good would work) would be greatly appreciated. I already talked to RockAuto since they had one listed for an 85 with manual trans, but I have an automatic and they say the one they have will not work and the one for the automatic has been discontinued.
Thanks, but I don't need a PROM right now. My AutoXray 5000 is reporting that the CALPAK is missing. I'm hoping that someone out there can help me find one. I'm sure with all the 85's that were built and running around, that I'm not the first person that has needed to replace the CALPAK.
WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the same codes too on my 85. Don't throw any money at it just yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The AutoXray 5000 I used of my brothers displayed the same thing for me when I was doing testing with it too. Get WinALDL and a laptop and you'll see that those codes don't come up when using that system. It has something to do with a diode that is needed in the serial cable that was built for me and the Xray 5000 cable does not have this. The readings on the 85 are slow and sporadic and I am absolutely no expert but go to the tuning section and get some ideas from there about WinALDL and datalogging through a laptop and you'll see that the AutoXray 5000 was wrong. That Xray is better suited as an OBDII solution as opposed to OBDI. Save yourself alot of unneeded expense and DON'T buy a CALPAK as right now you don't need it. I have a few posts in that section about some problems I was having and after having the tuner guys look at the info I had no problems to speak of other than leaking injectors. Hope this helps!

The 85 doesn't have a calpack. On the 86+ ECM's the calpack is made up of the prom chip and 2 smaller chips. These smaller chips are the actual "cal" chips, or calibration chips. They contain basic engine info for the ECM to use for limp home. These calibration chips are actually part of the 870 ECM used in 1985.
Goldeneye Vet - Thanks for the info, I was wondering about the possibility that the AutoXray 5000 was giving eronious errors, since I couldn't get them using the paperclip metthod and counting the blinks. I have WinAldl on my laptop but need a good cable. Built my own and was getting some info but not all and tried building another and now I don't get any info with WinAldl.
Morely - Thanks. But if the 85 doesn't have a calpak, then what is the smaller chip in the ECM that I had to swap over to my new ECM. There were two chips one about 1 1/2 inches long and one that was about an inch long.

Those were the calibration chips, in 86 they were moved to a larger plug in "calpack" which also contains the PROM
Try this: clear the codes by removing the battery cable. Drive car around. Jump pins A+B on the ALDL connector and see if any codes flash on the check engine light.

Actually the 85 does have a calpack, both the calpack and the prom are replaceable. I've replaced mine when my Auto Exray indicated a malfunction setting a code 52. After replacing the calpack it scanner indicated the same problem...

That is because the 85 doesn't have a calpack in the conventional sense. There are cal chips but the scanner is looking for them to be elsewhere and wired like a standard cal pack. A "cal pack" consists of 2 calibration chips and the prom on a single carrier (along with the ESC on 1990+ models), the 870 ECM has all 3 plugged into the ECM seperately.
Hi.
I have an 85 4+3 z-51.
I bought an Autoxray I think the name was z-link. It is the small handy one. Sounded to be very practical. I have had much problems with it reading the parameters on the 85 ECM the .....870. Some parameters did give totally wrong values so I contacted Auto Xray and they have problems with the 870 ECMs so they recommended me to set the scanning tool to other vehicles. Then some other parameters looked all right, but by this way I do not trust the readouts on the 870. However on the ......165 ECM and up the Auto Xray worked fine. I tried another scanning tool at a GM shop and everything was allright. I have now installed the winALDL on my computer and it works superbly.
