Default L98 Supercharger-Ignition?

Just wanted to know how many of you are still using the stock HEI ignition on your supercharged L98's.

Or stock HEI with up graded coil/module/wires.

Or if you added a CD ignition, did you notice any difference.

When I was supercharged I used a stock ignition on my L98>>>>however I was using the 1991 later style remote mount coil version...Since that system is supposedly weaker you should be fine...I ran a 355 L98 with 12psi of boost...stock ignition.. eventually I upgraded the coil BUT it did not make the car any better/faster..

Hey Vettester,

I'm an LT1, the most common ignition is either a crane or an MSD BTM... as you get into higher boost ranges, the stock ignition cannot keep up with the demand... as the spark will tend to "blow out"...

If you are like using a super coil or somthing in that magnitude you could be ok.

I'm using a MSD BTM with the plugs gapped at .035

Hope this helps...

Thanks, Before I sold my supercharged LT1 Camaro I added a MSD 6AL box and really didn't notice any difference except for running a little smoother. I was only running about 6lbs of boost.

I'm still in the tear down stage with my 86 Vette and was just curious is to what most are using, I will be at around 6-8 lbs boost and alky system with my L98 and hoping on around 400 rwhp after tuning.

At about how much boost would you need a better ignition system?

I would probably agree with you, once you start getting past 6 pounds you would probably need to consider it...

More so you would notice when you start making your runs, it will start to show in the upper rpm's... the main thing you need to consider is it is a cheap form of insurance in dealing with your boost retard to keep from detonation..

I use a Crane Hi-6TR which is the equivilent to the MSD 6BTM. It is a better mouse trap in that it is a fully digital box versus the older analog technology of the MSD6. You can use a MSD Digital 6 which is the Hi-6 digital equal, but I have had many many Digital 6 failures. While virtually no failures with the Crane box. Another variant is the Mallory Hy-Fire systems, they to are digital and are very good units. So far I have sold at least a dozen and no returns

Thanks for the info, I think I'll try out the crane ignition this time.
I hear nothing but good things about the crane box, have you heard anything about the Accel 300+?

Will I need the timing retard dial, or can I get that tuned in when I have it tuned on the dyno.

I would get the adjustable retard, even if its tuned right on the dyno. There is a possibility of getting a load of bad fuel. In that case you will want to dial in some additional retard.

I used to run a 355 L-98 with a small blower and ran the factory HEI with remote mount coil and an MSD6AL, and plugs gapped at 0.038". It worked fine. I would not hesitate using that combo again.

In that same car I currently run stroker L-98 with a MSD Pro Billet with Inductive Pick-up and the same external coil and MSD6AL, with plugs at 0.036". Works well, only different combo.

I am looking to set up another stock cube L-98 blower car and will be using the factory HEI with remote mount coil and MSD6AL. If it works, no reason to change it.

hey vetster, are you interested in any engine parts? fairly new to the forum, belong to CCDV. I have a procharger P600B, TPIS Mini-ram with modified fuel rails, 58 mm throttle body BBK, and plenty of info on setting up the system. I ran the blower on stock everything and got 115 Hp out of it at 12lbs. thanks.vince

Is that the MR that utilizes the FelPro 1206 gaskets? If so, I would be interested in that for another project.

Thanks,
Aaron

No Thanks, I already have most of the parts I need besides some gaskets and little stuff.

Post your parts in the for sale section, Good Luck!
