i have heard you can actually get two little gears to go between the crank and cam gear and it will never get loose or possibly break like a chain. I have also heard these are ungodly loud and whistle like a supercharger. anyone have any experience with this? im curious exactly how loud it is. i personally like the whistle of a supercharger
You can get a "noisy" gear drive or the quieter version. Wouldn't recommend it with EFI, they tend to trip the knock sensor, retarding your timing. The harmonics aren't exactly friendly to valvesprings, either. JMO
Oh yeah, on a stick car they sound like a siren between shifts
I'm not knockin them, they are good for an all out track car or a Fri night cruise in hero, but I would stay away in general.
Some people have managed to get gear drives to play nice with knock sensors but they are on the hairy edge. If I had the money to spend on it, I'd get a Jesel belt drive.
I can't see you geting anything other then a good old ouble roller in the 96 with the CPS and even that takes some work. While it may be possible with the pre-96 LT1 motors I have yet to see a gear drive on one yet.

Jesel belt drive in LT1 here! Takes some work to get the timing cover/opti to work well.
i guess no one here has done them on an LT1 or LT4. I guess i will probably go with a cloyes double roller timing chain
Yes, I have never seen gear drives for LTx engines for sale. I'd do what you are going to do now w/ the Cloyes, or GM Performance Parts makes the heavy duty timing chain for LTx engines, too.
