Has anyone removed the PS pump and driven the car without it?? I'm setting up a '88 for track days and have heard of the spec miata guys running with one hose looped from entry to exit on the rack and running without the pump?? Opinions appreciated. Thanks
The only benefit I could see is not having to worry about puking PS fluid all over the track if a hose breaks.
I would think that manual steering with wide tires would be a real strain on your arms. And the PS fluid lubricates the intermal rack so there would have to be a way of greasing the components.

Whatever you do DO NOT drive it long without the PS pump. A very experienced mechanic friend of mine said it will put a huge strain on the steering system. Reason I know this is that my PS pump quit and I was driving it around until the new pump came in, my friend urged me to park it until I got the pump.
Do not disconnect the PS pump. Ever look at a trans AM / GT1 etc car. They all have PS pumps. Big tires and a heavy car require it. I don't think you can drive a C4 on the track without it. When I lost the PS on my C4 race car, I damn near put into the wall. Been there, done that.

P.S. I did the removal trick on my Spec Miata but it weighs nothing.
