For me around 200-225 degrees is normal operating oil temperature. Depending on how I'm driving. If you start to get upwards of close to 300 degrees, that's high for stock.

180-220 (220 when extremely hot weather and stuck in traffic).

Otherwise 180-190 some never goes more than 200 in normal hwy driving.

My LT1 is obviously different and I use Mobil 1 synthetic, so supposedly that's safe up to 300, but I've never seen more than 260 under hard driving conditions and 200-220 is the normal range.

At one point, I took my oil to 264 degrees F and the oil pressure at that temp dropped enough to light up the red light when cornering hard. When my oil is at a lower temperature, let's say below 200 F, it doesn't drop when cornering. Why?? BTW I am using regular, generic, non-synthetic 5w-30. Does that have something to do with it? Would a thicker oil help, such as 20w-50??

Your '85 and my '84 share the same long block. I rarely see over 235°. It is easy enought to test your engine coolant temperature gauge sendig unit.

RACE ON!!!

200 -230 cruising, 280 - 350 or a bit more racing.

I have the exact same symptom on my stock '85. My oil runs around 235. This might be high. I also have intermittent heater symptoms. I checked the radiator. It was full. Then I opened this Coolant Flush plug on the PS of the engine bay. Nothing. My plan is to make sure to bleed the system when I do my TB bypass this week. I'll check the sensor while I'm there. Let's let each other know what we find.

I have never had to bleed a cooling system before. Anyone have any tricks?
