Might be a waste of time but it would nice to get rid of that "unleaded fuel only" notation.

Hey Bud: Count me in on any help, if you need an 87 for the purposes.
Use lighting "gels" to change the color. They are available at music and theater supply stores. There are usually some on EBAY too. They come in many different sizes and colors.

Hey CentralCoaster.. I just purchased the color gels that were described from a camera store. I need to know what you used as a layout for tracing. I noticed a cardboard of some kind ? If not what material was it that you used? I'm tackling this project tonite. Let me know if you can. Thanks.

I just used poster board. Cut the gels larger than the holes in the board so you have somewhere to glue to. Do not put any glue in the visible parts of the gels... this will melt the colored dye out of them. I don't remember what I used for glue, but aside from lining one of the gels up wrong, it came out great.
Thanks for the info. I like the red white and blue look... however I couldnt think of other color combos that would look good. They had alot of colors to choose from.. but I didn't think it'd look as good as the one you had. So I went ahead with it. They had a lighter blue and darker blue color gel. I got the darker blue one. How does it look in the daytime ? Is it easily visible ?

The blue is hard to see in daylight if there's any sun on it but it was always hard to see then anyways. The 86-89 dash should be better anyways, it doesn't get as much glare.

Well I finally finished it. It looks good at night. However I came across a problem no matter how careful I was. I had this dash apart with no problems a couple days ago when I put new bulbs in. Heres what happened.... My coolant temp/battery voltage guage now only shows a one digit number The remaining two are no longer coming up. What is the cause of this ? I took it apart again to see if everything was intact and nothing was broken and it looks good.
BTW... I see a sticker on the side of the cluster that it was remanufactered back in 1996 and everything inside looks brand new. They even coated the boards to prevent corosion. So what could be wrong ?
87vette, could you post pics as you go through the process please. I would like see what is all involed in this conversion.
Thanks
I didn't really take any pics yet.. however.. what one of my friends will do is contact his boss at a printing place he works at and see if he can get a sheet made for me instead of me having to go through the whole process of tracing and cutting all over again. He will find this out on monday. What I will do is scan the original color gel in Adobe Illustrator then fill in the areas with the color combos I think would look good and have them print one out on special material for me. His boss happens to own an 87 vette.. so who knows what his reponse will be.
Here are the pics of the new dash I put together based on CentralCoasters idea... and here is where my problem is with the voltage/coolant temp readings....

The panel you made is fine, but the lcds aren't getting a signal there. Those little rubbery strips that connect the lcds by contact to the board aren't pressed up against it enough.

Yep! You have got to ensure the rubber contact strips are completely aligned and in full contact with LCD panels. Take it apart and you should find the misalignment.
Suggestion; before you fully install the cluster, plug it in and test for a complete display.
So both of you are saying its as simple as that ? I'm guessing you are speaking of the rubber strips that line up inside the plastic piece in the center area ? Or are you alking about the maroon corner rubbers ? to keep things algined ?

That is one bright dash! Are you still using the original 882 style bulbs?
Would it be possible to get a copy of the mask / stencil for an '86 (4+3)? One or two of the backlights on my dash have gone out recently, so now would be as good a time as any to include this very cool lil project to my list of "to do's and fixes".

Yup.. still using the 882 bulbs. I purchased a set from mid america a few weeks ago when one of my bulbs went out. I changed all 4 at once and I think it helped with the brightness somewhat.
