Default Help!!!!! Car Problem!!!!

I have a 1996 LT4. Me and my roommate just put on my new corsa exhaust this past afternoon. Well after putting it on I drove it about 5 miles away to go eat dinner and then back to the house. We had an exhaust leak so we came home retightened the clamps and fixed it. We went out to check the car again and when we took the car to 6k RPMs and switched to second gear the car then started to putt and died. Now the car will not crank. Every now and then smoke comes out of the exhaust. We are thinking it is a fuel problem and possibly the computer isnt set to the new exhaust. But the car still wont start. Please Help!!!!!

if any emissions sensors were removed durring the exhaust install that would cause the puttering, but you would also get a code. i would check that all sensors are in place.

No codes popped up at any time of the problem....before, during, or after. The car cranks and starts to turn over but then suddenly stops....like the computer is telling it "hell no you cant start" .....im thinking the computer wasnt set to the exhaust....but now it just wont start. And again....no codes....ever

computers dont need to be set for exhaust, they learn the exhaust system, so it would make sense that it would run a little rough at first, but not to the point that it would die, ill wait till some of the LT4 guys show up on this one, wish i could be more help.

Never heard of an exhaust mod causing the car to NOT start or run.
Looks like some detective work is in order to see what the heck happened.
In the mean time, disconnect the negative terminal off the battery for a minute to reset the computer.(But I doubt its gonna help any)

The battery is disconnected and im letting it sit over night....we think its the fuel filter because records show it hasnt been changed ummm never....Im going to have the car towed tomorrow to American Corvette which is 5 miles from me and have a full diagnostic check on the car. If anyone knows anything else though before then please let me know. I could use all the advice I can get

If the fuel filter was bad, the car would still crank.

For 1996 you have to remove the O2 sensor and then of course replace it on the new exhaust(drivers side).

But now you say the car cranks?

The new exhaust din't cause the problem, it was the rev at 6000 rpm.

The car will crank but not start...so i know its not a starter problem. It sound like its about to start gives me a putt putt and then just keeps cranking then another putt putt and then cranking. We unscrewed the O2 sensor putting in the exhaust and just screwed it right back in when finished....we didnt mishandle it or nothing. It just seems like when we hit the 5500-6000 rpms the car flooded out and now when I try to start the car it still acts like it is flooded. The rpms arent the problem because its an LT4...I wasnt over revving at all. Also when I crank and crank smoke comes out during the putts and it smells like nasty gas. Again I dont think its bad gas because its BP 93 Octane....maybe the computer learned the new exhaust wrong and is dumping too much fuel into the engine or too little? Do I have to let the car idle a long time to learn the new exhaust before getting on it?

If you're noticing a strong gasoline odor, it's likely that you either have injector(s) that are sticking open and dumping excess fuel, or the ignition system failed and is not burning off fuel.

Or something went awry in the valve train at 6k RPM. Does the engine crank normally, or does it seem to be spinning faster than it should when cranking? If it's spinning fast, figure that something's amiss in the valve train. If it cranks normally, the valve train is likely okay. Check for spark.

Be well,

SJW

spinning normally, spark is okay, its turning over thats not the problem and its getting enough spark to get the engine to act like its about to start and rumble but then it kicks off....like something is stopping it on purpose

I put Corsa on my LT4 & just drove it off, did not even disconnect bat. Ran fine (&still does).

You have something else going on.

I would guess the o2 sensor got messed up.

Replace them b4 you start shoveling money at the dealer.

It does not hurt to replace every 50 to 75 k miles anyway.

I encountered a similar problem some time ago. My dad's vette just stopped on the highway, would crank, almost start then die. After much stripping etc we found that the cat had come apart, and a piece had turned sideways and blocked the exhaust. Prob highely unlikely, but maybe you've got something blocking the exhaust, and after that high rev, you pushed it down and blocked the exhaust?
