I recently finished an engine rebuild on my 84. I did not do anything to exotic with the build simply because I am trying to maintain a somewhat stock vehicle. I had a lil head work done, and installed a nice cam (suitable for ecm).. Car runs and idles great.. Very responsive, and am happy with the result. I do have a question though regarding the injectors. I re-used what was in the car - assuming they are stock with 177k miles.. Is there a way I can test them to see if they are working correctly? It appears to me that visually they are not spraying correctly. I am also seeing fuel splashing out of the tb.. I doubt that is suppose to happen.
So, my question again, how can I tell if they are working correctly? What injectors would you CFI guys recommend if i decided to replace them? I tried to get on crossfire.net but site is down right now.
don't worry about the crossfire vault being down, its only down because the main guy who runs it is near Hurricane Rita and needed to evacuate for a week or two. he will get it running A.S.A.P. for everyone so don't worry.
as far as injectors goes a stock CFI should have a 62lbs/hr injector for the front TB and the rear TB has a 65lbs/hr injector. the crossfire can easily be ran with the stock injectors to about 280hp and 300hp is really the limit of the stockers with duty cycle near the max safe limit from what i've read. assuming your cam is small with a ported intake and ported heads and exaust i'd guess your around that 280hp range. you can use the stock injectors and crank up fuel pressure to 14-15lbs and you'll probobly run just fine.
the next step up for injectors is 80lbs injectors and then 90lbs injectors from 454 TBI trucks. those probobly aren't necessary for your combo.
I tried a pair from a 454 for one race weekend, years ago. I've used the factory installed injectors before and ever since. Mine have a lot lower mileage on them, though. The spray pattern should be a perfectly even conical shape with no holes in the spray pattern, evenly sized droplets and definitely no drips. A flash light and even a timing light played in the spray pattern makes it easier to see. I don't know if one of the services that clean and calibrate the TPI injectors can work with with these or not. There IS a fine screen on the top of the injector that YOU can service. Sorry I can't can't recommend a service, brand or source, but mine have been (knock wood) trouble free for the last 22 years.
You should NOT see fuel exit the TB anywhere else.
great info guys!! I will try the timing light to try and get better visibility.. If im getting uneven spray pattern ect, any recommendatations as to where i can purchase some new stockers?
