Default Installing/ Balancing a New Harmonic Balancer

I'm installing a new harmonic balancer on my 86 stock L98. The new balancer is an aftermarket (Pioneer). Everything matches between the two, except.

On the factory (I assume) balancer, there are two 1/2" holes drilled, 3/4" from each other. One hole is just under 1/2" deep, the other 1/4". These holes, of course, don't go all the way through.

Are these drilled to remove weight and balance the balancer from the factory? Should I drill them on the new Harm Balancer?

NO!

Your old and your new dampers are neutrally balanced. That is balanced unto themselves. The balance holes are just what was necessary to achieve a balance on that particular damper. The different holes in the other damper is what it took to balance, IT. Leave it alone and install it as it is.

Your old and your new dampers are neutrally balanced. That is, balanced unto themselves, like a wheel and tire. You wouldn't buy a new tire and slap the old balance weights back on, with out checking, would you? The difference in the damper and the tire is that they can be and ARE balanced before they are packaged and shipped. That can't be done with the tire that will be installed in an unknown wheel. The balance holes are just what was necessary to achieve a balance on that particular damper. The different holes in the other damper is what it took to balance, IT. Leave it alone and install it as it is.

PS. Sorry about that Jimmy. I deleted my post to rewrite it after you captured it to quote it. What you have of course, is my original post.

Right guys, thanks. I guess what I was really asking is if I need to have the new harm balancer "balanced" at whatever shop before installing. Sounds like a silly question, but I'd rather sound silly than make a simple, yet critical, mistake.
